Danish Dance Theatre

Dansk Danseteater is Denmark's national contemporary dance company with 10 carefully selected permanent dancers.

Based in the Opera at the Royal Danish Theatre, they present dance at an international level, especially new productions for both children and adults throughout Denmark. Our performances insist on timeliness, fearlessness and uncompromisingness, and dare to mirror the time we live in with great vulnerability that makes us think and ask questions. Since April 2023, Spanish choreographer Marina Mascarell has been the company's artistic director. Dansk Danseteater is known for its dynamic and varied repertoire, ranging from major productions at the Royal Danish Theatre, over open air festivals and events to more intimate performances that challenge and inspire.

With a diverse troupe of dancers from around the world, the company continuously challenges the boundaries of contemporary dance and embodies Mascarell's deep commitment to humanistic values. Her internationally acclaimed works, and her invitations to other prominent choreographers, bring fresh perspectives to the company's repertoire and enrich both the national and international dance scene. Every season, Dansk Danseteater tours all over Denmark on small stages and to the larger music houses, as well as internationally to significant stages for dance. The company plays a vital role in the development of dance, not only through performances, but also through their activities for children and young people as well as several different events that promote creativity and collaboration within the dance environment.

Dansk Danseteater was founded in 1981 and is today a cultural institution with a wide wingspan. With the solid foundation laid by previous artistic directors such as Randi Patterson with Anette Abildgaard, Ingrid Buchholtz, Mikaela Barnekow, Warren Spears, Tim Rushton and Pontus Lidberg, the company continues to evolve. Today, the company is at the forefront of bringing contemporary dance to the cultural map, offering powerful and thought-provoking performances that captivate and engage audiences worldwide. Danish Dance Theatre receives funding from the Ministry of Culture. In addition, the company receives support for the individual performances from private and public funds.

“I try to find the artistic independence by taking artistic risks, avoiding the routine and the conventions. It remains essential to maintain an inquiring attitude,” Marina Mascarell, artistic director
